Jazz Dance

Jazz dance is a very expressive dance - you dance your feelings outward.

The warm-up is not only used to warm up the body to avoid injuries, but, as in ballet, you also learn and practice the technique that you need for the step combinations and dances. The muscles are specifically trained with choreographed exercises for the whole body, and mental comprehension/speed and coordination are also trained through fixed sequences of exercises and small warm-up choreographies. Posture is the focus alongside the exercises that train the whole body, which consist of isolation exercises, foot exercises, pliés, leg work, contractions, strengthening and stretching.

After the warm-up phase, the dance often moves on to the "diagonals". This means that the dancers practice different steps and step combinations across the room. This can be anything from steps like chassé, pas de bourrée, kicks, jumps and pirouettes. At the end, small choreographies are rehearsed to combine the whole thing. The longer you dance, the longer and more complex this part will be in the end.

A great thing about jazz dance is that it is very versatile. It goes from dramatic/emotional/soft to rocky/powerful/acrobatic to sexy/feminine/womanly... everything is always very expressive!
